16th century italian majolica

Gubbio  -  Urbania  -  Faenza 21 - 27 September 1998

1998: five hundred years ago, the citizenship of Gubbio was granted to Mastro Giorgio Andreoli. Mastro Giorgio, who was active until the middle of the 16th century, was the unsurpassed master of storied iridescent faience pottery.
The town of Gubbio will pay tribute to him with many events under the scientific coordination of Professor Gian Carlo Bojani, curator of the International Ceramics Museum in Faenza.
A retrospective exhibition on the theme: “MASTRO GIORGIO OF GUBBIO: A DAZZLING CAREER” will be held from September 19th to November 7th 1998. Thanks to the collaboration of Italian and foreign museums, the visitors will be able to see a selection from Mastro Giorgio's most significant works, with the added support of photographic reproductions.
1. Exhibition of restored works: “FOR A CERAMICS MUSEUM IN GUBBIO”. September 19th-November 7th 1998. Will show a series of restored works from apothecaries' equipment and some of the most significant pieces so as to offer a historic and cultural overview of ceramic art in and around Gubbio, and of its links with other centres.
2. Exhibition on “THE GUBBIO LUSTRE IN THE HISTORICIST CULTURE OF THE 19TH CENTURY”. September 19th-December 31st 1998. A collection of about 60 pieces (and other equipment) will help to understand the re-discovery of the Gubbio metallic glazes (lustre) as from 1856-57, and will show who were the main local manufacturers of metallic glaze ceramics active in the second half of the 19th century.
